BGI Education Center, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences
BGI Education Center, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences was set up in 2012 with permission from UCAS. Relying on BGI’s strong research power and world class teaching staffs, the center aims to train outstanding graduate students.
The students will spend their first half year in the university for intense basic courses and the later two and half year at BGI for hands-on practice and dissertation completion.
At the moment the center provides Master courses on Bioinformatics, Genomics and Biotechnology, and doctoral courses on Genomics. Two batches of master students have been enrolled and the center now has 5 part-time doctoral supervisors and 4 part-time master supervisors. The center plans to recruit full-time graduate students in the year 2014.
Innovative Undergraduate Program
BGI College is collaborating with universities such as Wuhan University, Southeast University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Sichuan University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, South China Normal University, Anhui Medical University, Qingdao University, South University of Science of Technology of China for undergraduate program. The undergraduate innovative program follows a model of“2.5+1.5+X” or “3+1+X”, and students can choose to further study at BGI for joint graduate program after graduation. Five batches of undergraduate students have been enrolled so far.
Continuous improvement of Engineering postgraduate joint program, scientific collaboration and training for your teachers etc. will be taken in the near future. A Innovative College has also been set up with Qingdao University and South University of Science of Technology of China for undergraduate and graduate programs.
CUHK-BGI Innovation Institute of Trans-omics
The innovation institute was established between BGI and Chinese University of Hong Kong for MSc and PhD programs ( Only Part-time MSc program in current).
Both institutes cooperated in setting up education plans and teaching and the program contains mostly taught courses, however includes more hands-on practices comparing to normal courses; BGI provides chances to take part in exciting projects.
There are continuous collaboration of MSc program with plan of launching PhD program; 2 sessions of students have been enrolled since 2011 (45 students in total, among them 36 are BGI employees) and application for academic year 2013 is currently undergoing; 6 BGI teachers are giving 4 MSc courses in the next academic year.
HKU-BGI BioAlgo Laboratory
The BioAlgo Laboratory was established between BGI and University of Hong Kong for PhD programs(Computer Science department).
Both institutes cooperated in setting up education plans, 1 year taught course in Hong Kong, 3 years of research work, with double-supervisor system from HKU and BGI, and BGI provides chances to take part in exciting projects.
There are 4 students ( 1 innovative college student and 3 BGI staff) have received offer, and will start the term in Sept. 2013.
Project-based Joint Postgraduate Program
BGI has worked with institutes such as University of Copenhagen(UC) and Aarhus University (AU) for joint graduate programs. BGI and the collaborated institutes will select qualified BGI employees for the program, then candidates will be sent to Denmark for the education as BGI employees. Study focus on research, and both institutes provide chances to take part in major projects.
At the moment 1st session students are undertaking courses (24 students in total); 2nd batch students are in process for UC; and for AU, 1st session students are undertaking courses (4 students in total).
Other Collaborations and Summer Internship Program
Besides the programs we have mentioned above, BGI College is also seeking new collaborative opportunities with other institutes such as the following:
Undertaking summer internship program and having 1 Harvard student taking internship at BGI.
Undertaking summer internship program and having 1 Cornell student taking internship at BGI.
﹡Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
Undertaking the RIPS-HK summer internship project to take 4 interns.
﹡University of Macau
Planning to first set up joint MSc program, then collaborated college.
﹡Macau University of Science and Technology
A MoU was signed by both parties to set up joint educational program.
﹡University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Organized BGI-IGB Exchange Workshop and having 17 members attending workshop at U.S. in January and May, 2013.
BGI started providing Bioinformatics training from 2005 and has successful held over 100 sections, attracting over 3000 domestic and 300 international participants.
The trainings include Cutting-edge/hot courses, Classic case-study courses, Skills and operation courses and Customized courses.
Medical related training
This is a collaboration with Health Human Resources Development Center of the Ministry of Health, and it provides cutting-edge genomics knowledge for clinicians so as to improve their skills; it serves also as a platform for them to communicate with each other. I type credits on medicine re-education are given on completion the training.
Genetic Counselor Training
The training courses are taught by world known experts, and cerfiticates will be gained on completion of the training which are issued by the Ministry of Health, and I-type credits of medicine re-education will be given on completion the training.
Genetic Counselor is characterized as clinical medicine counselor and health care professionals. They provide all-rounded customized genetic and heredity counseling services for their clients on their interest issues.
Popular Science Education
BGI has always valued bioethics. The objectives of our public education is to promote BGI's social responsibility and its value on bioethics of scientific research and its application; to promote genetic knowledge and to rectify the misunderstandings on genetic application among general public. Currently we are running PgEd(Personal Genomics Education Project); to start collaboration on international genetic technology education as a co-initiator), Middle school camps, and collaboration with middle schools, that is to set up lab, open courses and lectures etc..
Summer internship program
BGI College provides a one-month internship program for second and third year students of China's key universities majoring in Biology, Science and Computing; Outstanding students abroad will also be taken in for short-term internship.
With a learning mode of Intense training+Hands-on operation, this program allows students to learn about BGI and the cutting-edge technology of life science through projects-oriented classes. This is also a way to recruit talented fresh blood for BGI and its joint program.
The program has been successfully held for 4 times since 2009 with a student number of over 600; application for the yr2013 program has been finished and we welcome students who are interested in life science.
Summer camp (for high school students)
BGI College also provides summer camp (1-2 weeks, from July to August ) for Year 1 and Year 2 students from key high schools and it tries to bring out students' interest on life science and to promote science education with a hope of spotting young talents at a early stage. The camp offers talks given by experts and hands-on operation.
The program was successfully held from yr2012. 13 students from key high schools (eg. Shenzhen Middle School ) have taken part in the summer camp.
