Utrecht University, University Medical Center Utrecht and BGI Form Partnership

Utrecht University, University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht and BGI signed a formal agreement on 5th October 2011, in the Netherlands to establish partnership in genomics research programs. The next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics platforms of BGI will allow for efficient and accurate research in genomics fields.


Based on the knowledge, expertise and unique strength of each party, this partnership will bring joint innovative projects on large-scale genome sequencing and functional genomics. It is anticipated that the partnership will provide faculty and students at Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht with access to one of the world’s premier genomics and bioinformatics institute and its associated expertise, while for BGI researchers with access to the diverse and abundant research resources and educational expertise of Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht.


Jos van Strijp, Professor of Experimental Microbiology at UMC Utrecht said, “Modern genomics technologies play an increasingly important role in research and application developments. This partnership is the basis for all the institutions with further cooperation in life science researches. On behalf of Utrecht Life Science community, we are delighted with this collaboration.”


Li Ning, CEO of BGI Europe, also expressed his confidence about this partnership, “This collaboration will add immense value to the research of both Utrecht Life Science and BGI. We believe that life science society will obtain great benefits and advances from establishing partnership. We look forward to establishing further collaborations with other institutions in Europe and all over the world.”
