  • BGI has already invested hundreds of millions of dollars, and is at the forefront of a technology revolution known as Next Generation Sequencing (NextGen), which allows genomics testing to be done at a scale and speed that was previously impossible.
  • • September 28th, 2016 China has launched its first national-level gene storage bank, a billion-dollar facility that spans more than 47,500 square meters and includes a biorepository, a bioinformatics data center and a living biobank. The China National GeneBank (CNBG), which is the result of five years of development, is the world’s fourth national-level gene storage bank. Other such banks can be found in the US, Europe and Japan.
  • (Joe Biden is wrong. China does innovate)CNN Biotech firm B.G.I.: This company sequences more DNA than any other institution on earth -- more than Harvard, more than the National Institutes of Health. It's an industry leader with nearly limitless ambition.
  • China National GeneBank Opening Hopes To Provide Resource For Global Health The official opening of the China National GeneBank (CNGB) marks a new phase in Chinese-International genomics collaboration, providing scientists from across the world with access to one of the world's most comprehensive and sophisticated biorepositories with the goal of enabling breakthroughs in human health research, and contributing to global biodiversity conservation efforts.
  • Eight Innovative Industries China Does Better Than Anywhere Else The cost of sequencing a complete genome has fallen from $3 billion in 2003 to just a few thousands dollars today. That accomplishment is in large part due to one Chinese biotech firm called Beijing Genomics Institute, or BGI, which today accounts for about half of the world’s global genetic sequencing capacity. BGI sequences more DNA than any other institution on earth, including Harvard and the National Institutes of Health. The company it has mapped out the genomes for cancer cells, plants, insects, humans and the giant panda. It is now working to catalogue the genes of more than 2,000 families with autistic children. B.G.I. aims bring the cost under $1,000, at which point it could be incorporated into normal medical care.
  • It announced the ranking of the World’s Most Innovative Companies i 2014, and The Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in China. BGI ranks 37th in the world's top 50 Most Innovative Companies and for the second time China’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies.
  • In 1999, BGI contributed to 1% of the Human Genome Project, and today, BGI’s sequencing capabilities have contributed more than 50% of the world’s genetic sequencing.

-- Harvard University’s geneticist George Church.

  • I‘m very impressed with BGI’s achievements in gene sequencing, genomics and bioinformatics since its inception... I have seen many people who didn’t finish university and get in technology and industry. But I have never seen people like BGI team who didn’t finish university but get in basic scientific research, and have done so well.

——From Bill Gates’ letter to Wang Jian in 2013

  • Science Journal February 2012, China's Sequencing Powerhouse Comes of
AgeSince its inception in 1999, BGI has focused on developing its sequencing and bioinformatics capabilities while turning to outside teams in crop science, human disease, and microbiology to help define its research objectives. As a result, BGI has become the go-to organization for groups in need of sequencing. With the establishment of the European and American Genomics Research Centers, BGI is growing into the only genomics enterprise with a global footprint.BGI expects its growing influence to bring more benefits to the society.。
  • The New Yorker"January 6th, 2014
As the world’s scientists focus with increasing intensity on transforming the genetic codes of every living creature into information that can be used to treat and ultimately prevent disease, Shenzhen is home to a different kind of factory: B.G.I., formerly called Beijing Genomics Institute, the world’s largest genetic-research center. With a hundred and seventy-eight machines to sequence the precise order of the billions of chemicals within a molecule of DNA, B.G.I. produces at least a quarter of the world’s genomic data— more than Harvard University, the National Institutes of Health, or any other scientific institution.
  • 2013 Boao Forum for Asia "Talking with Bill Gates: Investment for the Poor"
BGI is an example of China's innovation. BGI is a biological research institute of based in Shenzhen, and also a world's genomic research center focused oncutting-edge research in animal and plant genetics... I am shocked that the average age of BGI's genetic researchers is 25 years old, which reminds me of the days when I started Microsoft, full of energy, quick-thinking and determination to use science to solve problems.
