Perennial Rice

Perennial Rice is developed through interspecific distant hybridization between Oryza longistaminata wild rice (Perennial plant) and Oryza sativa Asian cultivated rice (Annual). Once planted, it can be harvested continuously for many years (seasons). After the first harvest, there is no need to buy new seeds, raise seedlings, plow and harrow the fields, or transplant seedlings again; it can "be planted once and harvested multiple times" just like Chinese chives. Compared with annual rice, it can reduce production cost input by more than 40%, while maintaining stable yields, achieving no-tillage, carbon sequestration and emission reduction, and protecting the ecological environment. It is a beneficial exploration of the national food security strategy of "storing grain in technology".
