Recently, the Science Week conference organized by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) was grandly held in Nairobi, Kenya. As the smart agriculture practice system under BGI Group, BGI Bioverse made a remarkable appearance with cutting-edge agricultural technologies such as perennial rice, showcasing to the world China’s agricultural science and technology achievements in promoting South–South cooperation and supporting African food security, as well as their broad application prospects.

At the welcome dinner jointly hosted by BGI Group and CIFOR-ICRAF, Wang Jian, Chairman of BGI Group, delivered a keynote speech. He stated, “In the field of medical testing, our vision is to conduct genetic sequencing for 1% of the world’s population, providing reference maps for countries to establish gene banks. In the agricultural field, we have also committed to sequencing millions of seeds, species with significant economic value, and organisms of great importance for evolutionary research.” Chairman Wang particularly emphasized the use of BGI’s advanced, fully automated technological tools to promote the development of biological intelligence, and called on all sectors to work together, synergizing efforts in medical and agricultural research, pooling collective strengths to tackle key challenges, and contributing to the advancement of global life sciences and the well-being of humanity.

During the conference, the BGI Bioverse exhibition area was filled with highlights. Innovative applications and products such as perennial rice and microbial inoculants were showcased one after another. These achievements embody the wisdom and dedication of research teams and vividly demonstrate China’s independent scientific research capabilities. Participants from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas visited the booth and engaged in technical exchanges on new technologies and opportunities in agricultural development, promoting the sharing of agricultural knowledge.

BGI’s agricultural science and technology innovations also attracted attention from mainstream media. A Xinhua News Agency correspondent stationed in Nairobi followed and reported on BGI Group’s participation in the exhibition, presenting to the international community the fruitful results of China’s independently developed agricultural technologies being implemented in Africa, while also highlighting the important role of the China–Africa partnership in advancing Africa’s agricultural modernization.

Looking ahead, BGI Bioverse will continue to uphold the spirit of innovation, actively practice the Belt and Road Initiative, expand the depth and breadth of gene technology applications in agriculture, and deepen cooperation with countries along the route and global agricultural research institutions. Through technical exchanges, talent cultivation, joint research and development, and other approaches, BGI Bioverse will support global agricultural science and technology innovation, enhance global food security, and play a greater role in building a greener, more efficient, and more sustainable global agricultural development landscape, contributing more Chinese wisdom and strength to global agriculture.
