In April 2026, perennial rice varieties PR107, PR111 and PR112 completed their third harvest at the Laos‑China Modern Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Park. This marks a milestone progress of the technology from introduction to local production, showing that this homegrown Chinese innovation has taken firm root along the Mekong River.

From April 10 to 12, a research team led by Professor Hu Fengyi from Yunnan University, together with technical experts from BGI Everything, conducted an on‑site field assessment in Laos to evaluate the adaptability and strengths of perennial rice under local growing conditions.

The delegation visited the Rice Research Institute of Laos, the Institute of Ecology and Biotechnology under the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, and the Laos‑China Modern Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Park. They systematically reviewed the field performance of perennial rice. Field surveys confirmed that PR111 and PR112 grew robustly at trial sites, with great potential for large‑scale demonstration and popularization.

Developed by Professor Hu Fengyi’s team at Yunnan University, perennial rice is bred through interspecific distant hybridization between perennial male wild rice and annual Asian cultivated rice. It enables the unique advantage of one‑time planting, multi‑year harvesting.
Jointly promoted by BGI Group and Professor Hu’s team, this original Chinese agricultural technology has been introduced and cultivated in more than 130 regions across 10 countries worldwide.
The successful adoption of perennial rice is not BGI’s first collaboration with Laos, but the latest outcome of their long‑term, in‑depth partnership. Over the past years, BGI has been actively engaged in developing Laos’ public health and medical service systems, as well as joint agricultural technology projects.

Each rice seed carries Chinese ingenuity; every farmland witnesses China‑Laos friendship. Taking root in Laos across vast distances, perennial rice brings new momentum to local agricultural development and stands as another concrete example of Chinese technology going global.
