Recently, BGI Bioverse Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “BGI Bioverse”) was selected twice for Shenzhen municipal enterprise recognition lists.
On September 23, 2024, the Shenzhen Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Service Bureau released the list of Innovative SMEs of Shenzhen 2024, in which BGI Bioverse was included.

Just a few days later, on September 29, BGI Bioverse was once again selected for the Fifth Batch of Technology-based SMEs of Shenzhen in 2024.

Being selected twice not only recognizes BGI Bioverse’s scientific innovation capability and economic vitality, but also marks an important milestone in the company’s development. This achievement brings far-reaching benefits, helping to build comprehensive competitive advantages and further promote sustainable development.
According to the Interim Measures for the Gradient Cultivation and Management of High-quality SMEs issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the growth pathway of high-quality SMEs is divided into three tiers: Innovative SMEs, “Specialized, Sophisticated, Distinctive and Innovative” (SSDI) SMEs, and SSDI “Little Giant” enterprises. Companies with a high level of specialization, strong innovation capacity, and growth potential form the foundational force of high-quality SMEs and serve as an important reserve for cultivating SSDI enterprises.
Although established less than three years ago, BGI Bioverse has achieved remarkable results in promoting the broad application of disruptive technologies and advancing agricultural innovation. After undergoing rigorous district- and municipal-level application and evaluation processes, and passing comprehensive assessments across key dimensions such as innovation capability, growth potential, and specialization, the company successfully joined the ranks of technology-based and innovative SMEs. This milestone signifies a solid step forward on its journey toward becoming an SSDI enterprise.
Within less than three years of development, BGI Bioverse has earned widespread recognition from government authorities and the industry. This achievement is driven by two core strengths: continuous scientific and technological innovation, and a strong concentration of talent.
Technological Innovation as the Core Driving Force
Founded in 2021, BGI Bioverse is an important strategic layout of BGI Group in the field of agricultural science and technology innovation. It aims to advance the frontier technology promotion and large-scale agricultural application under the “All Things Grow” direction of the 518 Strategy, fostering the widespread application of disruptive technologies and innovation in agriculture.
Since its establishment, BGI Bioverse has actively responded to national initiatives by formulating a corporate science and technology innovation strategy and improving its internal R&D management systems. Leveraging BGI Group’s long-standing research accumulation, the company continuously transforms scientific research into industrial applications through independent R&D or collaborative promotion, delivering new products, technologies, and services.

With the successful application of the “sand-film” technology in multiple deserts at home and abroad, over 40,000 mu of desert land has been transformed, realizing the remarkable feat of turning sandy land into fertile farmland. As an innovative technological approach, sand-film technology provides a scientific solution to the governance of mobile dunes, injecting new vitality into deserts and barren land.
At nearly 130 demonstration sites worldwide, perennial rice—featuring “one sowing, multiple harvests”—has thrived. With reduced tillage frequency, long life cycles, high resource-use efficiency, and strong environmental adaptability, it offers a new, efficient, simplified, and green rice cultivation model. Moreover, as an important contributor to high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, perennial rice supports agricultural development in many countries and regions, contributing Chinese wisdom and solutions to global food security.
In addition, BGI Bioverse is committed to innovation starting from the “micro” level. Building on years of research in microbiology, BGI has digitized over 100,000 soil micro-ecology samples, selectively bred nearly 7,000 high-quality microbial strains, and independently developed three microbial agent products that have been deployed in 10,000-mu demonstration projects in Beidahuang. Expert yield assessments show significant advantages in crop yield improvement: compared with control fields, soybeans treated with BGI Bioverse’s Huayi series microbial agents achieved yield increases of 8.9%–14.5%, while rice yields increased by 8.2%–12.8%.
