Recently, the International Symposium on Perennial Rice in China and Africa, jointly organized by the Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the African Union and the African Union Commission, and co-hosted by BGI Group and Yunnan University, was held at the African Union headquarters. The symposium focused on key issues such as food security and sustainable agricultural development in Africa, aiming to address shared challenges and promote common development through deeper China–Africa cooperation.

The event attracted extensive attention from both domestic and international media. Major Chinese outlets, including Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily Overseas Edition, China.com, and CGTN Africa, as well as African media such as Ethiopia’s Capital and Uganda’s New Vision, reported on the symposium. Coverage highlighted the significant role of China’s perennial rice technology in enhancing food security and advancing agricultural modernization in Africa, as well as its importance in fostering China–Africa cooperation.

Developed by Chinese scientists, perennial rice technology enables a simplified, efficient, and environmentally friendly rice-farming model characterized by “plant once, harvest for multiple years.” In 2018, it was recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as an “International Agricultural Innovation Technology.”
