On December 3, a delegation led by Bo Shanglang, President of the ASEAN Economic and Trade Promotion Association (AETPA), visited BGI Group. During the visit, the two sides signed a strategic cooperation agreement on perennial rice and reached a series of strategic cooperation intentions in areas including telemedicine, genetic disease testing, and talent development, marking a new stage in cooperation between BGI and Cambodia in agricultural technology and public health.

The signing ceremony was held at BGI Group’s global headquarters — the BGI Time and Space Center in Shenzhen. According to the agreement, BGI and AETPA will jointly establish a Perennial Rice Demonstration Planting Base in Cambodia, promote the application and dissemination of perennial rice, enhance the sustainability and resilience of Cambodia’s grain production, jointly respond to the Belt and Road Initiative, and deepen cooperation in agricultural science and technology.

In addition to agricultural cooperation, the two sides also conducted in-depth discussions on life and health sciences, exploring cross-border collaboration models based on genetic technologies and digital healthcare platforms.

At the symposium, Yu Dejian, President of MGI Tech, stated that he looks forward to BGI’s advanced multi-omics tool platforms and innovative achievements — including perennial rice — contributing to Cambodia’s scientific and technological innovation, as well as improving public health and food security. Bo Shanglang highly praised BGI’s accomplishments in genomics and agricultural technology, and expressed his hope that this cooperation would bring tangible improvements to livelihoods and agriculture in Cambodia.

This visit and agreement further strengthened the cooperative relationship between BGI and AETPA, laying a solid foundation for the implementation of concrete projects and deeper industry–academia–research collaboration. BGI will continue to leverage its leadership in biotechnology and health-oriented agriculture to help build a global community of shared health and a sustainable agricultural ecosystem.
