Cell Press Honors Dr. Xu Xun and Team with the 2022 “Best Paper Award” for Chinese Scientists

December 13, 2023 Views:

Cell Press, an internationally renowned academic publisher, recently announced the winners of the 2022 'Best Paper Award' for Chinese Scientists. The award in the life sciences category was won by a research team led by Dr. Xu Xun, Director of BGI-Research, among others. Their award-winning paper, 'Spatiotemporal transcriptomic atlas of mouse organogenesis using DNA nanoball-patterned arrays,' was published in Cell on May 4, 2022 and created the world's first panoramic atlases of life

By using BGI Group's Stereo-seq technology, the study examined the early embryonic development of mice and generated the Mouse Organogenesis Spatiotemporal Transcriptomic Atlas (MOSTA), which maps with single-cell resolution and high sensitivity the kinetics and directionality of transcriptional variation during mouse organogenesis.

Identifying the characteristics of specific cells within a tissue has significant applications for understanding which cells are causes or indicators of disease, potentially leading to future gains in human disease research.

"Over the years, BGI has consistently adhered to a grand vision encapsulated as 'Omics for All.' To realize this vision, we are committed to gaining deeper insights into human diseases and the intricacies of human life," said Dr. Xu Xun, "In response to these challenges, we have identified that single-cell technology and spatial-temporal omics technology, particularly the high-precision Stereo-seq technology, hold significant promise in unraveling the mysteries of life and diseases."

In 2022, twenty-eight articles involving BGI-Research were published in Cell Press journals, with half of them led by BGI-Research. These papers engaged in research on human health and disease, biological processes and conditions, microbiology and ecology, and other topics.

Founded in 1986, Cell Press publishes over 50 scientific journals across life, physical, earth, and health sciences, both independently and in partnership with scientific societies. In 2022, there were a total of 1,932 research papers with China-based institutions as the first author's affiliation published in journals under Cell Press, an increase of 111.4% over the previous year. The 2022 'Best Paper Award' papers span multiple fields of science, including life sciences, material sciences, medicine, interdisciplinary studies, and sustainable development.
