BGI has been recognized as the world's top-ranked corporate institution in biological sciences, as well as the top-ranked institution in the Asia-Pacific region, in the newly released 2026 Nature Index rankings. This also marks the eleventh consecutive year that BGI has held the top position among corporate institutions in biological sciences in the Asia-Pacific region.

BGI ranks first globally and in the Asia-Pacific region among biological sciences corporate institutions in the 2026 Nature Index Research Leaders ranking.

The 2026 Research Leaders rankings assess institutional performance based on primary research output published in Nature Index journals from January 1 to December 31, 2025. The analysis draws on 125,385 articles published across 178 peer-reviewed journals spanning applied, health, natural, and social sciences. Selected by an independent panel of researchers based on reputation and impact, these journals make the Nature Index a credible benchmark for measuring research excellence across disciplines.

As of June 5, 2026, BGI has published a total of 6,124 papers, including 930 “CNNS” (the leading academic journals Cell, Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Science, and their related publications, if any) articles, with 194 published in flagship journals.

In 2025 alone, BGI published more than 480 papers, including 111 in “CNNS” journals and 21 in flagship journals. For example, in brain science, BGI participated in major collaborative research on a mesoscopic brain atlas and published the world’s first multimodal atlas of the macaque claustrum; in embryonic development, it constructed the world’s first single-cell-resolution mouse “3D digital embryo” and a 3D panoramic atlas of fruit fly development; in disease research, it revealed links between protein stability and disease; and in deep-sea life research, it participated in mapping the first ecosystem of the ocean’s deepest region.

According to the Nature Index analysis, China's research contribution rose by 22% between 2024 and 2025, far ahead of other top-ranking countries, extending the country's lead in global scientific output. "China’s sustained gains at the top are increasingly reshaping the institutional landscape," the editor commented.

This robust output demonstrates BGI’s sustained commitment to its mission of “Omics for All,” advancing genomic science and fostering collaboration with the broader research community to drive innovations that benefit human health, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.
