The 2025 DUT-BGI International Summer School, jointly organized by BGI College and Dalian University of Technology (DUT), has successfully concluded, bringing together 38 outstanding young students from 13 colleges and universities for an immersive journey into genetic technology and its industrial applications.

Thirty-eight young students from 13 international colleges and universities gathered at the BGI Center for the DUT-BGI International Summer School 2025.

    Bridging Science and Innovation

From July 27 to August 3, students at the high school, undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels from Malaysia, Serbia, Australia, Nepal, Colombia, and four other countries gathered at BGI Group Global Headquarters, the BGI Center, for a summer school that fostered interdisciplinary and cross-cultural exchanges.

Participants engaged in hands-on gene sequencing, omics technology workshops, and career development roundtables, building a solid foundation for academic and professional growth.

Exploring the Frontiers of Life Sciences

On the first day, BGI student ambassadors led a tour of BGI Group’s headquarters, where participants learned about BGI’s history, global presence, and its vision for proactive health through genomics.

BGI scientists introduced the innovation cycle of “basic research–technology development–industrial transformation” by showcasing how scientific research can be applied to products and services. Students conducted full-process mock experiments, including DNA extraction, library construction, sequencing, and data analysis—transforming classroom knowledge into practical skills and experiencing firsthand the importance of experimental procedures.

BGI’s role as a key contributor to the Human Genome Project was highlighted, and participants gained insights into the “Big Science” approach and BGI’s leadership in global genomics alliances.

At BGI’s agricultural base, students explored the application of genomics in modern agriculture and practiced plant grafting—gaining a deeper appreciation of how gene technology is transforming food production.

Advancing Public Health with Omics Technology

BGI has established a comprehensive health management and precision medicine system using genomic, proteomic, and bioinformatics technologies, serving global scientific research and healthcare. BGI lecturers introduced BGI’s industrial ecosystem, emphasizing the translation of research into real-world solutions. Students learned about AI-powered health management platforms that enable risk prediction, early diagnosis, and targeted intervention across the entire life cycle.

International case studies highlighted the global perspective of the summer school. Through dialogue with BGI Group leaders for international regional developments, students explored the diverse applications of genomics in global areas and innovative models for international collaboration.

A thematic workshop on “How Omics Technologies Are Applied Around the World” encouraged participants to develop local solutions for agricultural breeding, disease prevention, and other challenges, demonstrating the versatility of omics in addressing global issues.

Students discuss how omics technologies can be used and developed in their own countries.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists

BGI recognizes the importance of nurturing young talent. At the academic and career development forum, distinguished alumni and mentors shared their academic journeys and career planning experiences, inspiring students to envision diverse futures in science and industry.

During the closing ceremony, student groups presented their research proposals and strategies for applying omics technologies in their home countries, expanding their international horizons.

PhD student Susan Jyakhwo from Nepal remarked, "This summer school has been more than a learning experience—it’s a profound enlightenment on the future of life sciences and a spark for innovation. BGI has shown us a clear and inspiring path from fundamental research to industrial transformation."

    Award for Best Discussion Group.

BGI remains committed to building open, cutting-edge international platforms for young scholars, empowering the next generation of innovators to drive progress in life sciences and human health.
