Earth BioGenome Project (EBP)
The strategies to protect the ecological environment, and to efficiently use the biological resources has become an important issue facing human development and has attracted worldwide attention. In order to solve the problem of global ecological environmental changes, improve the current ecological environment, and fundamentally deepen human's understanding of biological evolution and ecological changes, analyzing the impact of environmental changes on organisms from an evolutionary perspective has gradually become the main scientific research direction. The study of the earth's biology and the ecological environment will effectively improve the ecological environment and promote the development of new ecological economy; the investigation and research of the earth's biological resources, such as the in-depth study of various species from a molecular perspective, explain the origin and evolution of each species, contribute to the in-depth exploration of biological species and lay the foundation for ecological protection and utilization of biological resources. Therefore, conducting genomics research on various biological species on a global scale can solve problems in the origin and evolution of life, species adaptability, and ecosystem evolution mechanisms in scientific research. It can also promote biomedicine, biomaterials, and other biomedical applications. The development of industries in all aspects such as renewable energy has great scientific and industrial value.
The Earth BioGenome Project (EBP) was jointly initiated by the BGI-Shenzhen (Institute of Life Sciences) and more than a dozen scientific research institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution. It gathered top scientists in various fields of life sciences and focused on various frontier scientific issues. A worldwide research network on the origin and evolution of life and biodiversity. The Earth Biological Genome Project aims to decipher the genomes of all eukaryotes known on the earth, fully understand the origin, inter-species relationships and evolution laws of life on earth, promote the preservation, protection and restoration of the biological diversity of the ecosystem, and the planet earth. The ecosystem can maximize the return to human society and provide new genetic resources for agriculture, medicine and ecosystem services. Promote human beings to a new starting point in understanding, using and protecting biodiversity.
Due to the several advantages and existing world-class facilities, BGI is the main co-sponsor for the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP), and thus leading several mega projects like 10,000 plant Genome Project (10KP), 10,000 birds Genome Project (B10K), one thousand fish Genome Project (F10K) and many other international collaborative projects. The main focus is on genomics research, biological evolution and development. For instance, animal and plant genomics, evolutionary biology, and developmental genomics to explore the origin and evolution of life.
