• To ensure the practice of “using gene technology to benefit the mankind”, BGI established the Institute of Review Board of Bioethics and Biosafety (BGI-IRB). BGI-IRB's mission is to "recognize, advocate, and escort" BGI's life science research and technological applications. BGI-IRB follows the national and international guidelines and protocols including the Interim Measures for the Management of Human Genetic Resources promulgated by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Health Care Committee, the State Administration of Markets and other departments, the “Ethical Review of Biomedical Research Concerning Persons”, and the “Clinical Trial Management of Drugs”, "Guidelines for Ethical Examination of Drug Clinical Trials", "Technical Guidelines for Clinical Trials of In Vitro Diagnostic Reagents", the Helsinki Declaration, International Conference on Harmonization (ICH), Quality Management Practices for Clinical Trials, World Health Organization (WHO) Review of the Work Guidelines for Ethical Committees for the Evaluation of Biomedical Research and The Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) International Code of Ethics for Human Health Related Research (2016), UNESCO World Human Genome and Standard Operating Procedures such as the International Human Rights Declaration and other countries and regions with advanced experience and expert consensus. “Respect, no harm, goodness and justice” is BGI-IRB’sonly criterion for ethical reviews. The current Chairman of BGI-IRB is Dr. Xu Xun, CEO, BGI Group and Director, BGI Research.. BGI-IRB operates by a tenure system and it currently has 25 members (including the Chairman) coming from varied professional specialties including ethics, law, medicine, biology, informatics, sociology, and community including 14 internal members and 11 external members. The proportion of female members is 44%. The members comply with professionalism, diversity and independence under the organization of standard operating procedures, effectively supporting BGI-IRB's impartial reviewing services. BGI-IRB also has a number of independent domestic and international consultants to provide advice on case review and system optimization.
